This workshop is most appropriate for first and second years or for older students who have yet to be exposed to the office.
The Critical Language Scholarship is a fully-funded, in-country intensive language and cultural immersion program. It is part of an effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages such as Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Junior Fellows provide research assistance to scholars working on the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace programs. They will have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony, and organize briefings.

Come learn about the Boren Awards, which fund the study of less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The Luce Scholars Program provides language training, and individualized professional placement in a country in Asia for 18 Luce Scholars each year who have had limited exposure to Asia. Apply as a fourth year, graduate student, or young professional.
A year abroad to research, study, or teach English. This is specifically geared toward fourth years, graduate students, or alumni, who may have only recently found out about the Fulbright US Student Award and have missed UVA's internal deadline.
